The four-village municipality
The municipality of Oisterwijk groups together four historic village centres and a substantial area of countryside between them. The arrangement reflects a long pattern in Dutch rural administration — small villages share municipal services without losing their separate identities. Each of the four still has its own church, its own square, its own pub, its own pace. Visitors who only see Oisterwijk proper miss three-quarters of what the wider area is.
Oisterwijk
The biggest of the four and the one with the train station, De Lind, KVL, the main shopping streets and most of the visitor infrastructure. This is the one most guides cover; we have plenty more on it across the rest of the site.
Moergestel
The second-largest centre, south-west of Oisterwijk. A working village with its own square (Sint-Jansplein), a substantial church, a historic watermill complex and the kind of unhurried atmosphere that has all but disappeared from villages closer to the cities. Several restaurants and cafés are worth the trip on their own. Full page →
Heukelom
The smallest of the four — closer to a hamlet — sitting between Oisterwijk and the Kampina reserve. Rural, quiet, mostly farmsteads and rural lanes. The natural starting point for walks into Kampina's western edge, and a peaceful overnight base if you want minimum distractions. Full page →
Haaren
A separate village north of Oisterwijk that joined the municipality more recently than the others. Older village core with parish architecture, surrounded by attractive countryside. Useful base for visitors who want even more nature and even less crowd. Full page →
"Four villages, four churches, four small squares — and a forest in the middle that links them all."
How to visit them together
The villages make a natural cycling loop. A pleasant half-day ride: out of Oisterwijk south-west to Moergestel for coffee, on through the lanes to Heukelom, then up via Kampina's edge and back through the woods. Around 30 km, mostly on dedicated cycle paths. Add Haaren on a separate ride heading north.
On foot, day-long village-to-village walks are possible — Oisterwijk to Moergestel is about 7 km on quiet paths; the reverse with a lunch stop is a full satisfying day.
Why visit beyond Oisterwijk itself
- You'll see what a working Brabant village looks like outside the visitor radius.
- Restaurants are often quieter and just as good.
- Architecture and church history vary meaningfully between them.
- The countryside in between is part of the experience.
- Quieter accommodation options.
