Getting here
How do I get to Oisterwijk?
By train on the Breda–Eindhoven line — two NS Sprinter services per hour in both directions. About 8 minutes from Tilburg, 25 minutes from 's-Hertogenbosch (via Tilburg), 25 from Eindhoven and 80 from Schiphol Airport with one change at Tilburg.
Can I fly direct to Oisterwijk?
No — Schiphol (Amsterdam) and Eindhoven are the relevant airports, with Schiphol the easier connection for international flights.
Do I need a car?
Not really. The village centre, KVL and the edge of the reserve are all walking or cycling distance from the station. Bike rental is widely available at the station and in the village.
Is there a taxi at the station?
Yes — there is a taxi rank outside Oisterwijk station. Most things in the village are walkable; taxis are mainly useful for direct trips to the Nature Gates or to outlying accommodation.
The nature reserve
Is the reserve free to enter?
Yes — open year-round, no admission. Parking at the Nature Gates is paid; members of Natuurmonumenten park free.
Can I swim in the fens?
Only in Staalbergven, the dedicated swimming fen, and only in summer. Other fens have fragile shorelines and rare aquatic life; swimming is not allowed in them.
Are dogs allowed?
Yes, but they must be on a lead at all times. Please pick up after your dog.
Can I cycle in the reserve?
Yes, on the marked cycle paths. Some paths are walking-only and clearly signed — please respect them.
Can I fly a drone?
No. Drones are banned in the Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen and Kampina reserves.
Are the paths accessible for mobility scooters?
Many of the shorter loops are. The firmer sandy-gravel paths around the Nature Gates work well; some softer sections defeat smaller wheels. Maps marking accessibility are available at Groot Speijck.
The village
When is the weekly market?
Saturday morning on De Lind, year-round in good weather. Busiest hour 10:00–11:30.
Are shops open on Sunday?
Most shops are closed on Sundays. Cafés, restaurants and most cultural attractions stay open. The reserve is open every day.
Is contactless payment accepted?
Universally. Most shops, restaurants and cafés take contactless or PIN. Cash still works but is increasingly the secondary option.
What's the language situation?
Dutch is local. English is widely spoken, especially by younger staff. Menus often appear in Dutch, English and sometimes German. A few Dutch greetings (goedemorgen, dank u wel) go a long way.
Culture & events
Can I visit KVL freely?
The site is publicly accessible — wander the courtyards and ground-floor spaces. The hotel and the EKWC studios are private working spaces; respect their hours and access rules.
When is the open-air theatre season?
The Natuurtheater programmes from late spring to early autumn — typically May to early September. Mostly Dutch-language; check the programme for individual evenings.
Are gallery vernissages open to the public?
Yes — almost always. They usually take place on the first Saturday or Sunday afternoon of a new exhibition. The artist is normally present.
Travel logistics

Maritime — wet, mild, changeable. Summer 20–28°C with occasional hotter spells; winter 0–8°C with frosts more common than snow. Always bring a waterproof.
Is Oisterwijk a good base for Efteling and Beekse Bergen?
Excellent. Efteling is ~30 minutes by car (and reachable by train + shuttle bus); Beekse Bergen safari park is ~20 minutes south by car. Many families combine theme park days with quieter ones in the reserve.
Where can I find an emergency room?
The nearest hospital is in Tilburg (Elisabeth-TweeSteden Ziekenhuis). For emergencies dial 112; for non-urgent medical help dial 0900-8844 to find an out-of-hours service.
About this site
Who runs Oisterwijk.org?
Oisterwijk.org is an independent visitor guide, not affiliated with the municipality, the tourist board or any commercial operator. See the about page for details.
Why don't you list prices?
Hotel, restaurant and ticket prices change too fast for a static guide to keep accurate. We describe character and context; check live information on operators' own sites.
