Moergestel, the quieter second centre

Seven kilometres south-west of Oisterwijk, with its own square, its own church, a historic watermill and the kind of unhurried Brabant atmosphere worth the short ride.

What Moergestel is

Moergestel is the second-largest village in the Oisterwijk municipality and the one most worth a deliberate side-trip. It sits about seven kilometres south-west of Oisterwijk, on the rural land between the two reserves and the Tilburg city edge. The village centres on a roughly triangular square — Sint-Jansplein — anchored by the parish church and surrounded by cafés, restaurants and small shops. It has a working farmers' atmosphere that Oisterwijk has largely traded away in exchange for visitor footfall.

The church

The parish church of Sint-Jans-Onthoofding dominates the square — a substantial Brabant Catholic church, comfortably in the same tradition as St Peter's in Oisterwijk but with its own dimensions and feel. Usually open during the day outside services. Worth ten quiet minutes.

The watermill complex

Moergestel has a historic watermill on the Reusel stream — one of the most photogenic spots in the village. The mill is a national monument; the surrounding paths along the stream make a pleasant short walk. Mill events sometimes open the interior to visitors; check locally.

Eating and drinking

The square is lined with cafés and restaurants. Several have outdoor terraces; the standard format is a long lunch, an excellent beer, and the kind of leisurely service Brabant does best. Two or three restaurants are gastronomic enough that locals from Oisterwijk and Tilburg drive over for evening meals. The village also has a strong bakery tradition — proper sourdough, regional pastries, the worstenbroodje done well.

Around the village

Moergestel sits at the edge of a particularly attractive rural landscape — meadows, small woods, narrow lanes — making it a good base for cycling and quiet walks. The Reusel stream feeds the watermill; following it leads into peaceful, lesser-walked countryside. Multiple cycling and walking routes connect Moergestel to Oisterwijk through this landscape.

"Sint-Jansplein on a sunny Tuesday lunchtime is most of what's right about southern Brabant in one square."

Getting there

  • Bike from Oisterwijk — 20–25 minutes on quiet cycle paths. The most enjoyable option.
  • Car — about 10 minutes; parking around the square.
  • Bus — local services run, less frequently than the trains; check 9292.nl.
  • Walking — feasible at about 7 km each way; better as a one-way with a lift home.

What to do here

  • Coffee or lunch on Sint-Jansplein.
  • Look inside the parish church.
  • Walk to the watermill on the Reusel.
  • Cycle a short rural loop through the surrounding lanes.
  • Dinner if you've made the trip in the evening.

When to come

Moergestel is open year-round and never crowded. Sunday afternoons on the square are particularly lovely. Quiet midweek lunches are good for the restaurants. The local feast day in late summer is a smaller, friendlier version of the bigger village events around.

For longer stays

A handful of B&Bs and rural rentals in and around Moergestel are useful if you want a quieter base than central Oisterwijk while still being within bike range of the reserve. Several rural holiday cottages stand in the surrounding fields.

Cycling tip. The shortest route to Moergestel from Oisterwijk is signposted; the most scenic skirts the southern edge of the reserve via Heukelom. Take the scenic version.
